Does Invisalign® Work?

Technological breakthroughs emerge in numerous ways. Some, like smartphones, are entirely new and result in whole industries that previously didn’t exist. But other inventions take on age-old challenges with new approaches. One example of this type of technology is clear braces like those found in the Invisalign® system.

This leading-edge orthodontic treatment replaces the conventional bracket and wire technique with precisely molded trays made of a special polyurethane resin which is both transparent and comfortable. Many people in New Orleans wonder if something so clearly different can be as effective as the traditional approach. The team at Downtown Dental is excited to share how well the Invisalign system may work for you.

The Clear Braces Basics

The Invisalign system works through a series of aligner trays which you wear in sequence, 22-23 hours per day for about two weeks per tray. Then, removing them only to eat, drink, brush and floss, each tray gently moves your teeth into their new, more aligned positions.

Clear braces like Invisalign have been studied through the National Institutes of Health, showing effectiveness in correcting many tooth alignment issues, including:

  • Overbite and underbite
  • Crossbite
  • An open bite
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth crowding
  • Minor to moderate misalignments

To determine if you’re a good candidate for clear braces, Dr. Richard Rathke will perform a complete exam and devise a treatment plan with your particular needs in mind.

How Invisalign Has Improved

Often when new technology emerges, the first thing that happens is a series of improvements and refinements. For example, though smartphones are relatively novel, the versions made today far exceed the capabilities of those first few generations. Clear aligners have followed a similar pathway, with new augmentations that make them more effective and widen their scope.

For example, Dr. Rathke may elect to use small resin buttons adhered to certain teeth that improve the effectiveness of an aligner for specific alignment issues. Another addition that helps your new smile last are both fixed and removable retainers that you wear immediately after your previous aligner to maintain your teeth’s new position
