Getting a molar tooth extracted might not be on your list of favorite things to do, but knowing what to expect can make the recovery process much more manageable. Are you dealing with a painful wisdom tooth, a stubborn infection, or severe decay? Our team at Downtown Dental in New Orleans is here to make sure you feel comfortable, informed, and supported every step of the way.

Typical Recovery Timeline

The recovery time for a molar extraction varies by patient, but here’s a general timeline of what you can expect:

  • First 24 Hours — Your body will start forming a blood clot over the extraction site. During this time, avoid smoking, using a straw, or eating hard foods to prevent complications like dry socket. Some swelling and mild bleeding are normal.
  • Days 2–3 — Swelling and tenderness may peak during this time. Continue using cold compresses and take any prescribed medications as directed. You should still stick to soft foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, and smoothies (without a straw!).
  • Days 4–7 — By the end of the first week, discomfort should start to subside. Most patients return to normal activities within this timeframe, but strenuous exercise should still be avoided.
  • Week 2 and Beyond — The gum tissue will continue healing and closing over the site. While the initial healing is mostly complete, the bone underneath may take a few months to regenerate fully.

Tips for a Smooth Recovery

  1. Rest and hydrate. – Give your body time to heal by taking it easy for the first few days. Stay hydrated, but avoid using straws.
  2. Stick to soft foods. – We recommend soups, smoothies, scrambled eggs, and yogurt. All of these foods are easy on your mouth and packed with nutrients.
  3. Keep the area clean. — After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water, but don’t brush directly over the extraction site.
